Pétanque at Mount Eliza

Pétanque has arrived at Mount Eliza

This classic Gallic game is equally accessible to men and women and the young and old. Granted, forearm and shoulder strength are assets, but a delicate touch and merciless cunning usually vanquishes unbridled brute strength. A calorically challenged person with a BMI of 35 can directly compete with an ultramarathoner with 5% body fat (there’s nothing so satisfying as watching a couple of old fat guys dispatch a team of young gym rats with 6 packs.

Pétanque violates the expectations of what constitutes an acceptable sport, or leisure activity.

It’s simple to play, yet difficult to master; the strategy is utterly obvious, yet it’s superbly subtle and multilayered. The equipment is inexpensive and lasts for years; it’s the lowest of low tech, nothing but a few tennis ball sized steel balls (boules) and a “little pig” ( the “Cochonette” or jack) the size of a ping-pong ball.

The game imposes terribly unreasonable constraints, a player can’t instantly improve by upgrading to the latest titanium driver or tungsten ceramic racket frame — the ONLY path to improvement is the antiquated ritual called PRACTICE.

So please come and join us and enjoy the only sport in the world (so the French say) that you can can comfortably play with a glass of wine in your hand !!!!
